On April 22, people around the world celebrate Earth Day. It serves as a reminder to take care of our planet in the many ways we can.
This year H-E-B joined the effort. While the chain is new to Lubbock, environmental sustainability isn't.
"Environmental sustainability is a big deal for us," Alyssa Owens, H-E-B public affairs West Texas, said. "You'll see it highlighted in our seafood department, you'll see it highlighted in our own brand departments. It's really important for us. We understand that the earth is here. We need to love on it and take care of it."
This Earth Day, the grocer celebrated by handing out free, reusable bags. Since 2008, the company has given out more than two million of them. H-E-B also encourages customers to find ways to recycle on their own.
"At the entries you'll see little drop off points where they can drop bottles and bags off. They can follow the recycling instructions on the boxes," Owens said. "What to recycle, how to recycle, it is making it so much easier. Really clear, really concise for our customers."
Customers can also help by donating to H-E-B's campaign Earthshare of Texas.
"Earthshare tear-pad is benefiting environmental agencies across the state of Texas. Customers at the check stand or even online can choose to give one, three or five dollars," she said.
H-E-B's fundraising efforts with Earthshare are ongoing and customers can make online donations at any time.
Owens adds it's a community effort.
"It really is just bringing the whole community together to make a difference because one person can only do so much, but a whole community can do so much more."
