Texas Tech Tennis

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team continues its homestand this weekend as it plays host to Abilene Christian and New Mexico.

With Monday's match against SMU canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the Mustang program, this week's Lady Raider tennis schedule is as follows:

Sunday, Feb. 21

10:30 a.m. – vs. Abilene Christian

Monday, Feb. 22

11 a.m. – vs. New Mexico

Texas Tech (4-1) enters the weekend with plenty of momentum, riding a two-match win streak and coming off a thriller of a 4-3 victory over No. 23 Arizona State last weekend. Along with the Sun Devils, the Lady Raiders have also pulled off victories over Arizona and UTEP this season.

Tech is led by Lisa Mays (4-0), Olivia Peet (4-0) and Margarita Skriabina (3-0), who are each undefeated in dual singles matches so far this season, while Kaitlin Staines earned her first career Big 12 Player of the Week honors last week after a top-40 singles win in the Lady Raider victory over the Sun Devils.

Heading into the weekend, Texas Tech is receiving votes in the latest ITA team rankings. Tech has one ranked singles player and one ranked doubles team in the latest individual poll as well. In doubles, Kaitlin Staines and Nell Miller come in at No. 43. Staines also appears in the singles poll, slotted at No. 100.

The Texas Tech women's tennis team completed the upset of No. 23 Arizona State on Saturday in a 4-3 thriller at Lubbock Country Club.

With no Lisa Mays, who had started at the No. 1 singles spot in every match for the Lady Raiders so far this season, Texas Tech overcame a slow start in doubles to come back and take four of six singles matches to clinch the win.

Abilene Christian enters Sunday's match at 3-5 on the year and on a two-match win streak following wins over Texas Permian Basin and Tarleton State earlier this month. Nini Memishishi has started the bulk of the Wildcats' matches at the No. 1 singles position and has gone 2-2 in those starts. Claire Fisher and Ileana Mocciola are 2-2 in doubles at the No. 1 position this season. Juan Nunez in his first season at the helm of the ACU program.

The New Mexico Lobos are 2-0 coming into this weekend's match against the Lady Raiders, coming off season-opening wins over Metro State and CSU Pueblo last week. Natasha Munday figures to start in the top singles line for the Lobos, racking up a 1-1 record so far this season. New Mexico has used a pair of different lineups in doubles, most recently led by Munday and Hsuan Huang, who are 1-0 as a pair this season. Vicky Maes is in her first full season of being head coach of the Lobos.

The Lady Raiders will wrap up their homestand next Saturday, Feb. 27 with a nonconference match against in-state rival TCU at 12 p.m.
